intake manifold gasket

I have a 5.0 LB9 TPI. Well, antifreeze is coming out of the tailpipes. This is not good. My mechanic suspects that it is getting in the engine through a leaky intake manifold gasket. From what I hear, this is a labor intensive project and will cost me. The engine has 120,000 miles on it, so I dont know what to do. Can anyone give me some info on this gasket and what it does. I am also wondering if a novice could take this project on. Or at least start it to cut back on labor costs. Also, anything else I should look at when the TPI intake is off. Thanks.

'88 305 TPI. Lots of questions. Where to start?

Yes, a novice can perform the repair, but it will require several days, lots of patience, and good work habits. You'll need a few specialized tools. You'll also need to change the oil, oil filter, and coolant when you finish.

As for the optional work to be done when the TPI intake is off, there are several things you CAN do, some things you SHOULD do, and a few that you MUST do. All the added work will extend the period that the car is out of service. Whether or not you do the optional work depends on your schedule, your will, and your checkbook.

Aside from common supplies and metric/standard hand tools, sockets, etc., less common items that you will need are:
  • T-40 internal Torx driver bit for intake and runner bolts(don't get a cheap one!);
  • T-20 Torx driver for the plenum extension/trim cover;
  • T-25 Torx driver for the TPS sensor screws;
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench capable of reading at least a range from 15-30 ft/lbs.;
  • A gasket scraper;
  • Anti seize thread compound (like Permatex 133K);
  • Non-hardening thread sealant compound (like LocTite PST);
  • A digital voltmeter;
  • A handheld tachometer;
  • Timing light;
  • Flare nut wrenches for the fuel fittings;
  • Sensor-Safe RTV gasket sealant (like Permatex 6C);
  • Probably a few other items I'm forgetting - like a repair manual.

The items you CAN do are:
  • Change to an adjustable fuel pressure regulator (AFPR);
  • Change the EGR valve and temperature switch;
  • Port the intake base, runners, and plenum;
  • Gasket match the runners and plenum;
  • Change valve lifters;
  • Bypass the throttle body coolant lines.

The items you SHOULD do are:
  • Remove the injectors and have them cleaned (arrange this in advance to minimize down-time);
  • Clean the EGR valve, exhaust passages, and test the temperature sensor;
  • Change the thermostat;
  • Clean the throttle body and IAC;
  • Replace vacuum hoses and the PCV valve;
  • Cut the intake runner gaskets to match the ports/runners;
  • Clean/replace the MAT sensor;
  • Replace fuel line 'O' rings.

The items you MUST do are:
  • Remove the distributor, so a new pickup coil might be a good idea;
  • Thoroughly clean all gasket surfaces, and be prepared to repair any rust damage around water passages in the heads and intake;
  • Drain the cooling system, so a flush would be a good idea before refilling;
  • Route the throttle cables BEFORE installng the plenum;
  • Set the timing and TPS after completion;
  • Set throttle minimum air position;
  • Clean the oil passage and pressure sensor at the rear ledge of the block;
  • Change oil after completion.

I'mn sure there will be other suggestions.
