Maf Help Please

Several months ago i remeoved the screen on my Mass Air Flow sensor. I am reading code 34 now and so i think i need a new MAF. Does that sound right? I have a 88 camaro with a 2.8L V6. Is it ok to buy a used one or best if id get a new one? Do they make high flow MAF's for Camaros? How much do they run in the price range? Thanks for the help.

First of all, you don't need a high flow MAF because you couldn't possibly need more air than it can flow. Secondly, removing the screens on yours was probably a bad idea because they protect it and help it to work correctly.

Have you tried replacing the MAF relays? Do that first.

How many wires are going into your MAF? And how many screens are in it?

Strike that, you had, I am assuming, 1 screen, three wires into the MAF? The screen was not a thin wire kind but relatively meaty? If so IIRC it is the digital thick film/frequency film type, and that screen is there for alot more than just looks. It directs the airflow to the sensor. Unless I'm mistaken (which is a possibility) you trashed your MAF.

Personally, I wouldn't risk a used MAF. You're lucky, since the V-6 MAFs are relatively inexpensive for some reason. I've seen them for as little as $69.00 instead of the $160.00 for V-8 MAFs.

Backing up a step or two, the 173 engine really doesn't need any extra MAF cpapacity, and as you probably discovered, de-screening it yields no results, beyond an erroneous MAF reading.

Look for a Wells SU-130 thick-film type to replace what you had, and you won't have any failure problems with it again.

SO if i get this Wells SU-130 thick-film, then i can place it over the end so it would be like adding the screen back in? Or would it be easier to buy a new MAF? thanks again guys

No no no. The 'thick film' refers to how the sensor works. It uses a film instead of a thin filament. It's not something to replace the screen that you removes. These guys are telling you to buy a new MAF. A Wells SU130 for $69.00
