cooling fans giving me grief...
Hey everyone. Stupid dial up connection here at home is really keeping me from posting and searching the boards. I have a question about my cooling fans on my 87 TA. First of all, the fan that is supposed to come on with the AC, never worked since i bought the car. The other fan however, seemed to work. Lately, Ive noticed slightly higher engine temps. Still below 220 though. Well, neither fan is working now as far as I can see.
When I stick a paper clip into the ALDL to pull codes, the fan comes on when i turn the key on. What does this tell me? I know it means its not the fan motor, or the relay. But does it always come on while in diagnostic mode? Does this mean that my sensors are working good too, and that the motor just isnt hot enough to make the fans come on??? I plan on checking out my CTS, and the couple other sensors for the cooling system. OK, I know thats alot. Does anyone have any ideas off the top of their heads? Any testing, diagnostic tricks? I would glady do a search, but as I said, dial up makes it a pain. It would take me hours just to read through a handfull of posts. Let me know what you all think. Thanks.

One of the fans (the pass side one I think) is controlled by a thermal switch in the pass side head. The switch closes at a pretty high temp. Not sure exactly what temp, but it's like 230-240*. This fan is also known as the secondary fan.
The primary fan is controlled by the ECM. Sounds like the fan and relay are OK, so that only leaves the temp sensor (in the front of the intake manifold), the ECM or the wiring.
Vader originally posted this sensor temp/resistance chart and I copied it. Use it check your temp sensor on the front of the intake manifold.
