piston weight?

ok I was reading up on some stuff the other day and they where talking about the pistons and how they started cutting on them to reduce their weight.
I'm sure it could be done, has been done, but would that either imbalance things or reduce how strong the piston is?

honest though how much can really be lost by grinding, cutting on the piston, where and how much are you going to lose as far as reliability?

Dude.......

I just returned it to him, but I borrowed a book from a friend of mine about "How to Blueprint an Engine". I gave it back to him yesterday.

I'm not sure who the damn publisher was either. I wanna say ProSeries???

But try to find it and Borders or Barnes & Noble. It gives approx wieghts of all piston types, and tells you where you should and shouldn't remove material.

BTW, you don't plan on doing this yourself do you? That's very delicate work. And IIRC, the piston has to be balanced itself. For instance, if you're 4 grams heavier than the lightest one, 2 grams have to be removed from one side of the wrist pin, then vise-versa AND it has to be in the precise opposite location.

Sounds like something I'd pay to have done, but that's up to you.

Also, I would think even just a little material removed can make a sizeable difference. Think about it: 2 ounces of material removed from each piston is 16 ounces(1 pound) (for a V8)removed from the rotating assembly. Thats one pound less to absorb HP at the flywheel. While it may not be much of a difference, I can imagine it would still have it's effect on engine wind up and wind-down also.

I figured it would help. also unlike a flywheel were you would be reducing rotating mass this is mass that has to change directions so I would figure a 1lb here would be worth more then a 1lb on the flywheel or frank, wheels or anything that rotates

but my main worry would be piston durability

no I wouldn't do it myself

honest I can't even do it since I dont have pistons
but it is more in the question of learning

IIRC, weren't you threatening to get a 3rd gen? I figured you had a SBC you were already building.

If anything, you should build one and put it in an RX7. Talk about a sleeper! You could win lot of races (read $$$$).

yeah but the noise from a 350 would be a little obvious

what I am wanting to do is take the car leave the N/A hood on there (no hood scoop) and put theturbo motor in there with some *minor* mods

turbo inlet duct
720cc prim and 1200cc second injectors
t60 turbo
ported intake manifold and TB
haltech
K&N
3 inch exhuast into dual 2 1/2 inch... yeah I'm going to have some cans though with about a 4 - 4 1/2 inch tip
all emissions removed
crane hi6 ignition
boost controller set at about 15 psi
full turbo drivetrain with some 4.30 gears
FMIC

there might be a few other things can't remember

but that should be good for over 300 at the wheels and well into the 12's

this way I just look like some regular N/A rx7 with a loud exhuast on it
the FMIC should be back far enougn so you can't really see it so that won't give it away just the exhuast.... which is normal for a rx7 least all the ones I have seen here.
and of course when I hit the gas hard and the turbo spools
but get a v8 to rumble in there and people would know somethings up.... no more lawnmower on crack sound
