My 305 is dead and I will probably be buying a motor from a friend. The thing is the motor was running and was pulled from another car. It has been sitting for about 6 months still full of oil and all in an engine bag. The cam is a hydraulic flat tappet which I am not real educated or expirenced with. I know when new (the cam and lifters) there is a break in procedure, but should I be aware of anything before I install and start this motor for the first time. Suggestions? Thanks alot.

 

You could use a pre oiler but 6 months isnt anything serious.

 

Thanks, I just wasn't sure about lifter bleed down with a flat tappet. Like I said the motor was running so the valve lash is already set, but I didn't know if maybe there was something extra I should do.

The "extra" thing you can do is to remove the spark plugs, fully charge the battery, and crank the engine in 15 sedcond increments to distribute oil and fill the lifters. You are correct in presuming that the lifters that were left with valve spring pressure applied probably had the oil forced out of them. This is not a significant issue, but you can spin the engine a few times as described to refill them.
