How can I make one of my fans stay on as long as the ignition is on?
This is on the '89 IROC in the sig. Basically, the computer is not switching the primary fan on when it should, so I need to temporarily bypass the computer's control of the fan until I can get that worked out. I know that I can always pull the relay out of the primary circuit and short the poles in the socket to force the fan on--but the problem there is that the fan stays on even when the car is off.
What I need is for the fan stay on only when the engine is on. Also, I would like to avoid cutting into any harnesses if I can because I don't intend this to be a permanent cooling solution--I just need to be able to drive my car without it nearly overheating.
Thanks

ground the green wire on the relay that is closest to the overflow bottle. that will turn on both fans on when the key is on. i will see how my fan behaves (primary) and let you know on the other thread.
having some problems huh?

I forget which one it is, but on your AC lines there is a pressure sensor that activates the secondary fan. Do a quick search for which it is (or check a wiring diagram), and either close it or open it (again, i forget which). Voila. Your secondary fan will stay on whenever you turn the key on.
This way, you're not cutting anything. Just unhooking a connector.

Cool, Ed, that's exactly what I wanted! I shorted that connector, and the fan runs when the key is on. That ought to hold me at least for a little-while until I can figure out what's up with the primary...
Mystikkal: Yeah, I'm trying to iron a few bugs out.
But that's just what happens when your car is off the road for a whole year doing an engine rebuild. You end up "fixing" a whole bunch of other things while you're at it, and it's not until you're actually to drive it again that you can test your work out. I'm making this car into my daily-driver, so I'm ironing out all of the bugs in order to drive it. That's why you're seeing a lot of posts from me all at once.
But I'd say that the car is doing pretty-well overall, given the situation.
Thanks guys
