I am getting ready to put my heads back on after a blown head gasket and want to make sure I do it right. I cleaned the block off really well already. Do you recommend using Permatex in addition to the head gasket or is that necessary? Also what should I use on the head bolts themselves? This is for an 89 L98(383 actually)

 

What caused the head gasket to fail in the first place?
Was it over heated?

Check the head to make sure it's not warped.

As far as sealers on the head gasket- no.
Follow the gasket manufacturers instructions.

I would suggest new head bolts, and as far as the lube and/or sealant, look in a factory service manual and do it the way GM says to do it.

 

Hey DannyT, The sealer on the headbolts is actually pipe sealer. G.M. sells it for a lot more than homedepot does. Some folks use nothing but I do use the sealer as does the factory abd the dealer. New OEM head bolts do not come with sealer unless you buy them from GMPP or some other aftermarket vender. Nothing else on the surfaces or bolts except cleaner..

Also, put the sealer on the bolts and let them almost harded before you install them.

Still waiting to hear something happening around sac. Maybe someday..

 

i use liquid teflon on the bolts, PST by loctite and k&w spray on copper sealer for head gaskets.

 

Yes, follow the gasket manufacturer's recommendations.

If no instructions came with the gaskets: Use nothing on composition gaskets. On steel gaskets, use aluminum paint or spray Copper Coat.

That Teflon paste pipe sealant is good to 600 degrees F. I've been using it for years. On the head bolts and intake manifold bolts.
