Ryu.................Dude go with the 1992 TA, in the overall scheme of things....the 1992 was the last year of the 3rd generation cars..( Banshee style), the rear tail lights alone are a hot item to find on these cars since they are much different than 85-90 style, and the rear deck spoiler on them are much sleeker looking than previous models why not put yourself into a class that has the (Banshee style) Birds...I have a 1992 Bird and I know that I have a classic car for it being the last year made of them before the drastic change to 4th generation cars.....Enjoy !!!!!!!!!!!!!

They started using speed density in 90. So the 92 would be your best bet. The earlier model will use a MAF controlled system which I've heard is less desirable.

I believe GTA's were some of the heavier thirdgens weren;t they? I always see stock times on 5.7 GTAs around 15.0 when other L98s like the Irocs and Formulas run mid 14's. Is this just coincidence?

I would say the 92 is the better car if it's built half as well as my 92 Camaro was, but the 88 looks better, I just don't like the changes Pontiac made on the 91 and 92 cars.
When I was shopping I wasn't too impressed with the 91-92 aero look, but now that I've owned it for a couple years, the previous style looks kind of square to me now. Weird. I guess it kind of grows on you after a while. You don't see near as many 91-92's around either.

85-90 GTA L98.....
Equipped with the MAF setup which is more acceptable to small modifications of the engine (without tuning). The rear bumper, ground effects, and nose cone are different. HP ratings in 85-90 were below that of 91-92. I'm thinking that the 85-90 came with the stronger 9 bolt Borg Waner rear unit...not sure though.
91-92 TA L98.....
Comes equipped with Speed Density setup which is the better way to tune if you get into it. Some cars came with the SLP performance package which the 85-90 did not. Different tail-lights...as mentioned above.
That's all the big differences I can think of. And about the GTAs running 15 flat.....I own an 87 GTA with only a cat-back and minimal freebie mods running in the lower 14s. The weight of these cars are equivelant to IROCS of the same period - if equally equipped.
Decide which style you like better and go for that car. I've owned both styles and still don't know which I like better.
