I installed a toggle switch for my fans so I could turn them on when ever. After installing it, I was driving on the freeway and my car got to 260* When I got home I looked and found no coolant was going to the thermostat? All the coolant was just sitting in the radiatior boiling?????? Help me, I must figure out why no coolant is making it to my motor. (Did I bypass the computer and now the car don't know when to let coolant flow)?

It is probally just a coincidence, but your stock thermostat stuck closed at the same time you rigged the fans. Just unbolt the goose neck and swap in a 180 degree stat. Stock temp is 195 degrees but a cooler running engine will create a few more horses.
P.S. When you rigged the fans did you bypass the computer? If you did, I would allow the computer to control the fans as it would normally do but also rig the switch so you can turn them on.

 

I alreadt have a 160* stat. I just wired the toggle switch right in to the fan wires. I am not sure if I by-passed the computer? So you think the reason I am not getting coolant to my block is because my stat went out?

 

The thermostat controls the coolant flow to the radiator, not the ECM. If you are sure your not getting flow into the block the thermostat is stuck closed. You will need to replace it. I know you have a hypertech chip too so get another 160 so you dont detonate.

 

Whoops I mean the stat controls flow to the block(not radiator).

 

Is that possiable that while doing this toggle switch, my stat just magicly stuck closed? That sounds about right, but I was think it had to be something eles?

I will give it a try.

Anyone eles have any ideas?

How is your water pump? with the engine running squeeze the upper and lower hoses, You should be able to feel the coolant flowing thru them. Also look around the pump for coolant leaks it will usually start to leak thru the weep holes when the pump goes bad. Also check the bottom radiator hose, make sure it is not collapsed common problem as the hoses get old. P.S. I'm moving to my new house in Roy next month but when you get back we'll have to get together and check out each others cars. Later.

 

I don't have any idea what it is? My upper hose does not get any coolant running through it at all. I just don't thnik my thermostat is bad, it worked fine before the switch? Does any body have any idea about the computer not getting any info to send coolant?

BUMP,NEED HELP

 

Well, I live in south east Texas, and my car has been running incredibly hot. Turns out my water pump went out, and that I also had a crack in the plastic part of the radiator. I also have the 160* thermo and fan switch, but I took out the thermostat completely and wired my fans to a toggle switch along with the new water pump and radiator. Now at night it runs about 130* and will get to a little below 200* during the day with the ac on. If you do need a new pump or radiator, go with ac delco parts. Sorry I rambled, just had to share my thoughts/experiences.

I presume you wired the toggle switch to GROUND the green wire at the cooling fan relay(s), not to supply 12V to it. If the fans are running, you are probably O.K.

Todd is correct - the ECM and fan circuit have nothing to do with coolant flow, only fan operation. The coolant flow to and from the radiator are affected only by the water pump and thermostat.

The lack of coolant flow visible in the radiator can be caused by several things including a stuck thermostat, water pump impeller worn or slipping on the shaft, or collapsed lower radiator hose.

You may also have significant blockage in the radiator and/or cooling system. Try letting the engine warm up with the radiator cap removed and without manually turning on the fans. As the coolant warms it should expand a bit and possibly overflow a bit of coolant. Eventually, you should be able to detect flow in the radiator or the upper hose. Do the heater hoses get warm? If so, the pump is moving coolant and the thermostat may be stuck closed.

I took out the thermostat and it still wont flow coolant to the block? I let the car warm up with out turning the fans on manualy and the coolant went out the cap top, and more so when I gave it gas?

I am betting on it being a water pump, but I just can't see why, it never had to many signs of going out?

I guess I will replace the water pump tonight and part of Sunday, and I will just hope it works??????
