Could no TC lockup be causing the gas smell in the interior?

Hey all, I've been trying to figure out why my car has a pretty bad case of gasoline odor in the interior. While I've not ruled out a leak, could this also be a cause? I was reading up on some posts because my TC won't lockup. One of the moderators mentioned that without a working VSS, the canister wouldn't purge and that would contribute to a strong gas smell in the interior. As well as causing no TCC lockup. My speedometer jumps around occasionally but 90% of the time its dead. Not sure if the ECM is receiving any data from the VSS. Its a 1989 GTA, I've read that it can be partially mechanicle, or fully electronic. Can anyone clear this up for me?

Jza, a moderator in 2001(not sure if Jza is still active here) quoted, "Since you'll lose TCC lockup, you'll lose about 3mpg. It(vss) also controls the canister purge, so don't be surprised when you start smelling a strong gas smell after you shut off the car." How important is the vehicle speed sensor (VSS)????

Could this be the cause of my woes? Not that I'm gonna stop checking for leaks or anything, but its another possibility I have to check out. Besides, I want that little bit of gas mileage back!

You can check out my gas leak thread ->Gas smell in interior? Spilled gas, or leak?

It could very well be related. The VSS also has some control over overall ignition timing advance, fuel trim, fan operation, EGR operation, AIR port or divert operation, and as you have indicated, TCC and EVAP.
