Weird Problem? Any Suggestions?

The car has 102,xxx miles. It is a 1988 pontiac Trans Am GTA 305 5 speed. It is originally a California car so i think it has the emissions equipment. Slowing down from any RPM past about 1000rpms it feels like it looses all compression, thus surging forward for just a millisecond then it is normal again. It is most pronounced in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear. I think that it is happening in the lower gears but I am going to slow to feel it. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what this might be. Also i was wondering what the production #s were for the GTA 5 speed for that year since i have heard they are pretty rare. Thanks for the help in advance.
