Please tell me these mods are worth it!
Please tell me these mods are worth it!
The past few weeks I've been buying presents for my car here and there. Like the headers, 4bbl carb and dual plane manifold.
I have yet to install them. Partly because I'm a lazy bastard and partly because I hav'nt had the time yet.
I do plan on installing everything in the same weekend though and not driving it untill everything is tuned and working properly...I want to notice the most SOTP difference.
My #1 question... With the above mods, keeping just the stock cam and heads, do you think I have a chance in seeing 240hp and a ton of torque?
THank you! :hail:

Personally, I doubt it; I think you might make it to 225 though. The stock heads and cam are 2 of the 3 strikes against that motor. Strike 1 is the exhaust; every piece of it from the heads to the street needs to go, as a complete assembly, because any piece that is compatible with L03 exhaust will preserve the bottleneck - the tiny Y-pipe size.
To run a non-computer-controlled setup like that you'll need a different distributor, without computer control.
I really think you're taking the wrong approach to making your car faster. The right way, is to carefully, thoughtfully, and honestly research what its limiting features are at any given moment; find the most limiting one; and fix it. In order of importance, those are exhaust, cam, heads, gears, and torque converter (if it's an auto). Unbolting and re-bolting big shiny chrome things that sit right up on top of the motor where everybody can see them is the path to an expensive, gas-drinking, unreliable disappointment.
If I was you, I would send the carb and intake back; buy a full exhaust; and look at a cam, and a set of 081 casting heads off of 305 TPI or carb setup; LB9, LG4 or L69; from 87 up. You can find them in Monte Carlo SS as well as F-bodies. Then go find a 3.42 gear rear out of a 90 or newer 6-cyl car, and put the SLP posi in it, if you can still get one.

I'm not your average 305 guy whos mad at the world and wants to prove the 305 as being a performance engine... I guess it can be, but not unless you dump a bunch of money into it and go forced induction..... Thats not what I'm about.
I'm going to get a 350 or SBC 400, or even a 327, just depends on which one comes by at the right price first. I don't want to install a cam in the 305 just to have to yank it back out...
I'm just asking about these mods adding HP to the 305 because I'm stuck with it for the next 6 monts to a year while I build the real engine for my RS.
Anyway... 225hp? Maybe high 14's in the 1/4?
