timing gear

after my cam swap my car only runs right with the distributer turned as advanced as it will go.....the only thing i can think of is could this be from only installing a new cam gear and reusing the old crank gear?

A common misconception is when the dots are facing each other, #1 cyl is at TDC on the power stroke, but actually #6 cyl is at TDC on the power stroke. Is that what happened?

Did you put on some kind of aftermarket timing cover?

original timing cover......i was just searching and found some people ran into problems with using different gears......ok i have my distributer tunbred so that the part where the coil comes out straight on it.,...instead of somehwere around horizontal.....is at a 45 degree angle or maybe slightly more counter clockwise turned

Did you happen to compare the dowel pin location on the replacement sprocket to the original? The dowel position should be the same in relation to the marker "dot". If you still have the original (removed) sprocket, you can visit your supplier and compare it to another replacement instead of tearing the cover off again.
