Is it OK to swtich to Quaker State High Performance Synthetic 20W-50 on this engine:
1992 305 TPI,
80,500 original miles,
Perfect running condition,
Oil is still clear/honey colored every change,
Burns so clean, there is no carbon on 1,000 mile old exhaust pipes!
I've heard it's not a smart idea to switch to synthetic on high milage engines but I believe mine is an exception due to it's prestine condition. I thinking at this point heat and wear on the bearings are my worst enimy right now and this should keep it cooler in there. I also tend to drive it hard every now and then too. The 20W-50 is because of the milage otherwise I would just use 10W-30.
Thanks.

Current Mods: 80 Series Dual Outlet Flowmaster & TPIS Air Foil, THAT'S IT! 98% STOCK AND DAMN PROUD OF IT!!
Future Mods: Subframe Connectors, OE Replacement K&N.

IMHO it is not a mistake to switch to synthetic ever, except sometimes for purely economic reasons.
And that is a very low mileage engine actually, I would not recommend using oil that thick. If it were mine I would use 10W-30. For comparison I have a 78 El Camino 305 with 334,000 on the original motor and a 74 Caprice convertible 454 with 265,000 on its, I use straight 30 (not synthetic - they both leak too much and I don't want to spread money all over the pavement that way)in both of them.

Thanks.
As far as me using 20W-30, I still think I will use it because it is very hot here, 100-110 this time of year, and my car runs at 220 all the time and I am always having to stop for lights. My oil pressure also tends to go down to about 15-20 when stopped which I don't like at all. So it is more about temp and oil pressure than anything.
Don't worry, I plan on going to 10W-30 for the winter as I always do
Unless someone tells me it will hurt my engine using 20W-50 then that is what I will continue to use in the summers around here.
Glad to hear I can still switch though
