MSD wiring harness, do i need it?

Or can i wire the box myself?

You can wire the box yourself,but the wiring harness makes it a whole lot faster and easier.

Car: 87 Monte Carlo SS
Engine: 89 IROC 350 TPI
Transmission: 700R4 rebuilt w/TCI kit
Axle/Gears: 9" from 57 ranchero unsure gears.
if you have the small HEI dist (remote coil) I personally would say yes its a whole lot easier to wire up, if you have the large HEI cap (coil in cap) then no, it just plugs in as long as you follow the directions, just put on in a friends car a month ago. no wiring harness other than what originally came with the 6AL system. good luck

Plus by using the plug-in harness there's the benefit of being able to plug in your old GM coil if your MSD box dies for some reason!

So should i get the universal harness or the gm harness? And how much should it set me back?
