Smog Pump Info????
I left work this evening, and started my car and it appears that my smog pump has seized. I've got a 305 TPI and it's the pulley that's just below the A/C compressor.
I can have it towed to a shop or get a smog pump from a parts place and replace it in the parking lot.
Can anybody tell me anything about how hard this is to do?
How long does it take?
Will I need any special tools?
It looks to me like I will have to remove the A/C compressor first. Will I have to do anything special in order to avoid screwing up the A/C?
Any experience in this area will be appreciated.
I live 90 miles away from my work, so I can't just run home and get something I forgot.
If I decide to fix it in the parking lot, I'll have to bring the tools I'll need and hope I have remembered to bring everything I'll need.
I'm hoping someone has done this and can offer some advice.
Thanks in advance for any help!!!!
Rich

For what it costs to get a new pump you may as well seize the opportunity (pun intended
) and yank that sucker outta there for good.
https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/t...rpentine.shtml
You'll need brass plugs for 1/4" tubing and the belt that article mentions.
Regardless, you'll need a torx head (IIRC it's T40), a 1/2 drive ratchet or breaker bar, two wrenches/sockets of the same size (I don't remember what size) and a pry bar.
Use the 1/2 drive breaker bar to swing the tenstioner up and remove the belt.
Put your two wrenches/sockets on 2 of the 3 bolts on the pulley. One is to keep her from spinning (even though it's seized) and the other's to loosen. DO NOT REMOVE IT!!!
Move your wrenches to the next bolts (counter-clockwise) and repeat.
Now you'll have to extract the two you've loosened enough so you can wedge the breaker bar between them to keep the pulley from rotating. Now loosen the 3rd bolt.
After you remove the pulley you'll be able to access the torx head bolts that hold the pump onto the pulley (I meant the bracket
). Go easy because if you strip one of those torx heads you'll be fined for obscene conduct and vulgar language.
Good luck.

Thanks...
I finally got home and based upon your information, I'm going to remove the pulley and put the different belt on, so I can get it home, and then I'll decide whether to remove the pump entirely or replace it with a new one.
I live in Florida, which doesn't have emissions testing, so I don't need to have it, but I'm a little concerned whether it will run OK without the pump, or whether I might have to put a different EPROM in the computer, to make it run well.
At least I will be able to drive it while I decide.
I really appreciate the information. If you lived in Ocala, Florida, I would consider buying you a beverage or two....
Thanks!!!!

There are numerous people that have taken it off (including myself) with no ECM problems. I'll think I'll be OK.
Be careful with the belt and no pulley there. It may want to rub on the pump shaft.
BTW, since the weather is more stable there than it is here, I wish I did live there.
