Who here is running Sportsman II's?

Just curious to who is running World Products Sportsman II's and what you thought of them? I have a new set, ready to assemble and put on, but may do some porting first. Any feedback on what your thoughts are on porting them first or just bolting them on and go.
Thanks!

I run sportsman II's on my Z.I would recomend at least havivg the exhaust side ported and have the intake side port match to a felpro 1205 intake gasket along with your intake manifold.

I agree with fast83. Get a Standard Abrasives Porting Kit, and just follow the instructions. It's really simple. I did my Sportsman II heads, and then had them flowed. The difference compared to box stock flow figures was astonishing.

I have them on the '89 Formula 355.

I really like them, the only problem is that I need a better TPI set up than the stock one...

I know there is so much more potential there, especially with a Miniram, which I will hopefully get sometime this fall or winter.

Everybody knocks them as a bad choice... But as long as you match parts, you will be okay.

First and foremost thing, make sure you do the research on it, and that they will compliment your combination.

I am not real fond of them. They have relatively poor port flow for their larger port volume. This is not a good way to build power. They aren't terrible heads, but I have never been impressed with them. A well matched engine will perform well even if some of the parts are not a good performer. Problem is that I think you will end up behind where you would be with a better set of heads and a well thought out combination. Try the Iron Eagle heads, maybe a 180cc or 200cc port volume. If you want to put these on a 350 try the 180's. 200cc is a bit much for a 383 but it can work, for a 400 it will be fine. The Iron Eagle port flow is much better while having the same size or smaller ports.

Thanks for all the feedback. But one thing that pi$$es me off, is that I wanted the Dart's and when I called both Summit and Jeg's, they both told me the Sportsman's were a "better" head. Actually, after some time talking to the tech and the salesman at Summit, they both told me that they were dropping " the whole Dart line", for reasons they couldn't say........hhhmmmm.

So Dr.Pepper, your saying that 200cc runners is too small for a 383? If that's true, I would only want to clean them up and not do any porting.

For a street driven 383 200cc is getting a bit large. On a 200cc head with a 383 you would not want to enlarge the ports any. A small port clean-up and gasket match should not make a noticeable increase in port volume, so that is ok. If the engine is built purely for the track with a properly matched cam, then 200c isn't much of a problem.

I am curious about Summit dropping the Dart line. It doesn't sound like a quality or performance issue, otherwise they would just drop a single item. Like if their blocks had cracking problems they would just stop carrying Dart blocks. It sounds like a warranty or supply issue. I would also be a little curious to whether Dart or Summit is to blame. Behind closed doors I am sure Summit Racing is not the kindest company. They are a major retailer and having them market your products or not market your products can make a big difference in your sales. They may have wanted a better wholesale price while maintaining the retail price to increase profits, when Dart refused they twisted their arm threatening to not carry Dart at all. This is just a theory, but between warranties and politics there is plenty of room for a conflict. Also, if you were Summit and were trying to force Dart to your wishes would you spread the news? Maybe Dart would have a different opinion as to why Summit is not carrying their products anymore. Also keep in mind Summit has a small conflict in their own Trick Flow heads. In case anybody has missed it, Trick Flow is owned by the same company that owns Summit Racing. That is why they push their own heads heavily. The new 23 degree T.F.S. heads are basically in the same category as the Dart heads. They may not want to carry Dart just to boost sales on their own heads.
