setting up my distributor....

well i made an attempt to do it tonite...........didnt work

i put my finger over the #1 spark plug hole and had my helper bump the engine over

i thought i felt the air push my finger off and the white mark on the balancer was facing upwards when you look through the water pump (looked like it was in the middle of the timing pointer)

so one of two things could have possibly happened

it wasnt on TDC on #1 but rather TDC on #2 (which is fired right before #1) because now that i think about it, the marker on the balancer was a little counterclockwise of the timing pointer

OR

i thought i felt the compression push my finger off and it really didnt, thus i was on TDC #6

i am pretty sure i had spark, because when i turned the key i some (very little) smoke coming out of the carb (seems like i had spark, but not at the correct time)

can i rotate the engine by hand a stick a screw driver in the #1 spark plug hole? because my first method (of sticking my finger over the plug hole) didnt work out so hot

also, i dont want to remove the valve cover because thats a project within itself (previous owner stripped out all 4 torx bolts on both valve covers )

also, the engine sat almost exactly one year without being started..............will there be oil pressure when i start her up, OR do i need to prime the pump

(like an idiot i did not drain the oil, nor the coolant)

thanx for your help

I would definitely prime the oil pump first. You would for sure know if it pushed air out the hole. Did you get someone to turn it over with the key? You could just turn it over by hand and line up the timing mark on the 0* mark. Then you would have a 50/50 chance of having it right. If it's 180* out then just pull it out and turn the engine over 360* and you'll have it right for sure.

Glad you got it going. Hey, what's with the 700r4 comment in your sig? I use one and will be in the 11's in the next couple of weeks. The guy that built it ran a 6.89 in the 1/8 mile with one built just like mine. 6.89 converts to about a 10.75 in the 1/4. I guess what you mean is "Friends don't let friends use "STOCK" 700r4's."
