Results of Port Work on BBC
See this thread and the links within for the porting work I'm talking about https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=171116 .
For reference, 1st times listed are from a run during the last race of the 2002 season, October 13. Mods were as in sig minus the port work, plus composition head gaskets, a 1" q-jet->squarebore adapter, dropped-base open element, and ET Drag slicks. Calm winds, density altitude equivilent was 6500'.
60'-----2.292
330----6.360
1/8-----9.608
MPH----75.88
1000'---12.414
1/4-----14.778
MPH----95.93
With the port work, steel shim head gaskets, spacer/adapter removed, non-drop base open element, and Drag Radials (it was a DOT-class) last night, 15 MPH headwind, density altitude equivilent 8000':
60'-----2.257 (so much for big ports killing low end - had another run w/2.245)
330----6.271
1/8-----9.496
MPH----77.15
1000'---12.268
1/4-----14.624
MPH----96.04
This was my 4th run with the mods (and tires) - 2 time trials and one round of elimination before this - so I basically didn't have any time to tune at the strip beforehand (jetting up primaries by 2 is all I changed tuning-wise). Given the headwind and altitude density, I think I'm on the right track.
After all, my best run at the beginning of the 2002 season was in the mid/high-15's....
P.S.: I think I also learned not to fear LEDs. That last run was a -.008 foul, in which I rolled into the lights slightly after the staged came on - to "improve" my light (previous were .109, .019, and .122, w/o the roll-in). Oh, well, the other guy pulled a .005, anyway...

Okay, I'll admit those numbers weren't too impressive.
I took it out again today. Jetted up the secondaries by 3 (I actually had jetted up the primaries by 3, not 2), and mounted the ET Drags.
First run was a 14.459, 2nd 14.454. Density altitude was about 8200 today, 10-20 MPH head wind all day.
There was a long wait between last time trial and 1st elim run (2 hours), and almost 1-1/2 between 1st & 2nd. Those runs weren't too impressive, but I treed both and kept going. In round 6, I was paired with a 10.76 sec dial '70 Nova - I chose that moment to cut my worst light of the day, he cut one .004 better, and proceeded to run a 10.761 - I took the stripe on a back-off.
That last timeslip looked like this:
60'-----2.178
330-----6.098
1/8-----9.289
MPH---77.63
1000'---12.049
Since I backed off, this next is a calculation based on previous 1000' ET and 1/8 MPH:
1/4-----14.379
And best 1/4 speed of the day:
MPH---97.10
Now I think we're getting somewhere.
The really sweat part of the day was these numbers:
.008, .005 (time trials); .001, .027, .004, .002
Two runs behind me in my class, after I pulled that .001, a guy hits a .000 - we were paired up in the next round, and he bulbed -.025 against me (which was my .027).
I think I can learn to get along with LED's....
(Truth in advertising disclaimer - I also mixed in a .043 - 1st round, and a .066 - last run).
