Why does my oil come so far up the dipstick?

Went out to check the oil in the IROC. Did the usual pull, wipe, insert and pull again. Only I had oil coming almost half way up the dipstick. Kinda makes it hard to get an accurate reading.

I know its not overfilled, I just changed it myself about a month ago. 5 quarts of 5w-30. The car had been siting almost 24 hours.

Pressure is good while driving.

Is something wrong? Should I change the oil again and use 10w-30? I only use the car in the summer so I'm not worried about the winter.

Double check the other side of the dipstick. I have this happen a lot on the trans stick, so try this. Otherwise, play it safe and change the oil and filter agian. 5w-30 vs. 10w-30 will make no difference.

Did the oil look OK? Sure you don't have coolant leaking in there?

I have the same problem...

It has to do with the way it gets dragged outa the tube...

like the other guy said, check the back and it should show you what the level really is...

Your engine might have excessive blowby... OR one of your breathers is plugged or PCV valve might not work. Check that stuff too...

You're not checking it while it's running, are you?

happens to me on alot of cars with bent dipsticks, even though it drags the oil you should be able to tell a flat line where it is somewhere on the stick and like everyone else says, if one side is dragged the other side should have more evidence
