Got My LT1 Cam Today...
i got the LT1 cam that i bought. im confused on what to do with it. i was going to put it in but then i decided **** it and ill just resell it. the reason i dont want to put it in is im afraid ill loose power. what id like out of a cam i put in is an overall stronger power band, and the power band extended to 5200revs instead of 4500. BTW this is for an 89 IROC 305TPI 5spd.
anyone have any insight on whats going to happen if i swap this cam in?
i know desk top dyno isnt the most accurate thing in th world but using the same engine variables and the two differnt cam specs it showed a loss of power with the LT1 cam.

Lots of things decide what your powerband is. With TPI, changing cams will never raise your powerband above 4500rpms unless you port/replace the intake. Just curious, why did you buy that cam if you thought you'd lose power using it?

the plenum is ported out, itll rev to 5500 if i want it to, but the power up there is getting slim. with the stock 3.08 gears i had to shift at like 5200. now with 3.27s i shift at 5K so im not revving past the powerband to much. i originally bought the cam thinking it was a better performing cam then my stock one. but then after talkin to people and my DD2K experiment i changed my mind. so now im lookin for what this cam will do for me, so i know wether to put it in or sell it.
if you already have the cam... save the money for something else... if you are going for BUDGET, the LT1 cam is an EXCELLENT choice, especially over STOCK... especially with a 305... when you use a part designed for a 350 (ie. the LT1 cam) it will react MORE in a smaller bore engine (ei. YOUR 305), it will add 500 RPM to the lower-end and the upper-end of the RPM range... (so the LT1 cam is designed for 1000-5000 RPMS BUT that's in a 350... so on a 305 the projected RPM range of the same cam will be ABOUT 1500-5500 ).... the reason for this is that the cam is doing the same work (duration/lift) with a smaller combustion space , therefore (when considering PERCENTAGE, NOT absolute power) It will be more benificial to a 305... this is the same reason why a mild cam in a 350 wouldn't do much in a 400 ... In addition to the increased power-band, the LT1 cam is DESIGNED to work with computers (specifically TPI injected vehicles),, so it'll match very well with your other components.. (with a custom chip to tie it all together)
I use an LT1 cam on my 305 TBI, and with headers, TBI mods, and a ported set of heads I easily put out much more power than a stock LT1.. (I've dyno'd at about 310 HP, 360 ft-lbs of torque) AND I still get 18/25 MPG (city, and highway respectivly)
Desktop DYNO told me that I would see only a SMALL increase, with the LT1 cam, but after speaking with some small-block guru's I decided to do it anyway... and it turns out that they were right,,, (310 HP doesn't lie)
what cam specs were you using for the LT1 cam ???
