Weird noise...

Hey Everyone,

I have a problem with my car and being a college student, I'm strapped for money, and seeing this board's wealth of knowledge I figured I'd ask you all. My rear end is making a strange "thud" as I call it, when I get on the gas right from a dead stop. I'm guessing it's the axle, but I'm not sure. I was wondering if anyone knew of this being a chronic problem in Thirdgen's and if there is anything I should check before going to a real mechanic?

Thanks
- JP

Are you sure the sound is coming from the rear end? Or is it more from the center console?

These cars have a common habit of breaking transmission mounts, which will cause the transmission to hit the underside of the car.

If this is the problem, new mounts usually run $35 and can be fixed with a jack and a socket wrench.

Tranny mount, had the smae problem. cost $8.99 at autozone, its a pain to get cause theres a cross member right in the way but you can get it even so. Mine was spilt in half when i finally got it out. takes bout ten minutes to do. jack the car up and have a jack under the tranny and simple unbolt and rebolt the new mount.

I just wanted to tell everyone that said, 'tranny mounts' you were right on...took care of the problem today, with a $30 Urethane mount, 45 minutes and the problem's solved. Thanks again for the help.
