Testing TPS Voltage??

Who's got a good idea on how to keep a good connection while doing this? I was testing it last night and the reading would hold and then jump around then hold for a bit. The voltage seemed low ( 0.39v to 3.85v at WOT) but it wouldn't stay steady enough for me to be able to adjust it. I hope these low readings are part of my starting problem. Any ideas???

Well, the range is from initial (Personally, I like .35-.45 max) up to around 4.5-5V@WOT. I have seen as little as 4.3V@WOT. Depending on the car, somewhere around 80% triggers WOT to the computer, I think that is 80% of 5V. The reading shouldnt jump around at all if the throttle isnt moving. I just stick a pin in the wire and hook the other end of my DVM to ground, works fine for me. Been doing that since 1986.

Back when my 76 4x4 blazer was injected by a Holley TB system, I had to devise a quick way.

Here's how:
1. I used "Scotch Locks", one per wire

2. A couple of female spade terminals (if your VOM leads wont go into the scoth locks and contact the male terminals)

3. A little wire as required

As much as I hate scotch locks, they worked fine for this. I left them on full time, then I only had to connect the spade terminals and wire when I needed to test.

Take three wires, four inches long each. Remove the insulation from both ends about half an inch. Remove the insulation from the center of each wire, about a quarter of an inch. Take the yellow splices you get with a wire stripper set and remove half of the yellow insulation from the splice. Crimp one end of each wire to the three splices. Puch the splices onto the TPS harness conector and twist the other ends and push them into the TPS switch. Make sure you're getting the proper voltage from the "HOT" wire that supplies power to the TPS and then check your signal wire for the proper return voltage to the ECM. Hope this helps.

My tps reads exactly .54 at idle but only gets up to 3.8 at WOT. Should I replace it??

To only add more confusion to the voltage... I've noticed when you are using a nice scanner there is also a % throttle blade angle (or something like that), that i've been told has to be 0%. When fiddling with my tps it is very easy to get the voltage within the min-max except when you have to adjust for the third variable. What's everyone's thoughts on this?

The pin idea works good for me. Just stick it in the back of the connector and test from there.

If your readings for TPS voltage are low at WOT, I don't think you need to replace the sensor, all you have to do is adjust it right??? Just loosen the two screws that hold it in and tilt the top of it towards the back of the engine?

you don't have to do all the jumper BS to get a good reading.. just jam the probes of your tester into the TPS wire harness.. make sure they have a good connect and go from there. Worked good with my fluke meter.

I've been wondering about this 2. When testing the TPS which ground should u use? The TPS sensor ground or chassis ground? By the way, the company Mid-America has the perfect tool 4 testing the TPS. It's TPS test harness which plugs inline with the TPS and 2 alligator clips coming off the reference wires 2 attach the volt meter 2. And it's only $12. www.madvet.com

The pin trick is the easiest and fastest way to go.Just ***** hole in middle wire with pin, clip neg. from tester to any ground, insert positive(red)into pricked hole, read voltage, with free hand open trottle read voltage at WOT adjust screws as needed total time less than 5 min.

If you adjust the sensor for more voltage at WOT ( from 3.8 to 4.5), wouldn't that effect the voltage at idle also?
