SLP Headers $350 @ Summit Racing
SLP Headers $350 @ Summit Racing
I had recently heard on this board that SLP was selling their headers for 349.95. Well, needless to say I was bummed, because I had just ordered mine from Summit for 479.95. When my parts arrived I called Summit, and spoke to a gentlemen named Don. As we were on the phone he got on SLP's website to varify my claim. He got back on the phone and told me he would simply credit my account the $130. I don't know about you, but this seemed odd to me. I was exstatic, simply because I had expected to have to send the headers back to Summit and then order new ones from SLP.
Just thought I'd let you guys know!

GOOD DAMN LUCK WITH IT. I JUST CALLED AND NOW THEY TOLD ME "THEY'RE NO LONGER CARRIED". GO FIGURE... IT'S AMAZING HOW MANY SIDES THERE REALLY IS TO A STORY. ANOTHER GUY TOLD ME THEY WOULDN'T MATCH THE PRICE, DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT NO LONGER CARRYING THEM, SO I HAD TO DIG UP THIS POST TO SEE WHO THE GUY WAS AT SUMMIT, HE WASN'T THERE WHEN I CALLED THIS TIME, AND NOW THEY DON'T HAVE 'EM ANYMORE. SOUNDS LIKE B/S TO ME...

Ya'll are probably correct on all accounts, but I'd try again with Summit, or just directly deal with SLP. Believe it or not, when I installed mine the passenger side went on in about 10 minutes, but it took me about 90 minuts to get the driver's side on! They sound grreat though....

Got my SLP 1 3/4" headers today(ordered direct from SLP). Opened the box looked at the contents,... major disappointment.
Very sloppy welding. Welding flash sticking into the exhaust stream in many places. AIR tubes either sticking into the exhaust stream or barely in the primary tubes. Very rough welding inside the primary tubes. Gaskets too small for the tubes. Some primary tubes measure 1 3/8" at thier widest side-to-side points. Catalyst adapter will need some major massaging/ and or grinding to fit over the y-pipe and catalyst.
Considering these used to be among the most expensive thirdgen headers available, I would've thought that I might of been buying some "pride in workmanship".
As I am already enlisting the help of some machinists and metalworkers at work for the purpose of finessing the rest of the custom cat-back, I'll see if they can "help" these SLP pieces along. While I'm at it, I think I'll talk to some folks at NDT, and see if they can test the quality of the welds. Visually inspecting them has left me with some doubts of thier reliability. If you don't have access to the kind of folks I've mentioned above, I guess you'd have to settle for the kind of crap SLP sends you.
Thanks for the cheap license plate frame, SLP: but it's not like I'll be going ouy of my way to advertise your wares.

On a brighter note: if you are considering custom designing/ fabricating for any part of your exhaust system, you relly need to check out <a href="http://www.headersbyed.com/">"Headers by Ed"</a>. I received some u-bends from them and their work is absolutely gorgeous. They make their own pipe from flat stock, and then bend it themselves. The quality of the welds is a sight to behold(they left a metalworker at work speechless). The dimensions are 110% accurate throughout the piece, to the point that we mic'ed the pieces to 0.001" and found them to be true and without variation. Yes, their handiwork is more expensive than similiar pieces available through such places as Summit or elsewhere. But in this case, you get what you've paid for, and it is money well spent. The good folks at "Ed's" will definitely get more of my business in the future.

It's a fact - Summit don't have the SLP headers anymore - no longer carried. I tried again the other day just to confirm or refute and they don't have 'em. I ended up ordering direct from SLP, but I hope they don't send me trash like 88IROC got...
So... anyone out there looking to buy them, don't waste your time trying Summit - just call SLP.

88 IROC, I was also disappointed with the overall quality when I received my SLP's, but the don't sound like they're in as bad a shape as yours. The welds were decent, but there was a little bit of slag in places but that was because they MIG weld them together. Personally I think they should be using a TIG welder on them. Although I haven't measured them I think all of my tubes were the exact same size, and the appropriate size. From what I've seen they're probably still the best flowing headers out there for a ThirdGen, and are worth the $350 they are now, but no where near worth the $400-600 that they used to go for.

What do you guys think of the Hooker Super Competition headers? are they any better than SLP's ?
------------------
Mods:Hooker Aerochamber 3" exhaust, gutted kitty,
March 2 piece underdrive pullies, smog pump gone,;these two made a very noticable difference.
14x4 K&N open air element filter
Eibach springs with KYB's are already installed up front. Gonna work on the rear soon.
Appearance: Harwood cowl hood, Z-28 wing, painted black-original color was light blue)
Stock Options:117,000 miles on motor, 5spd, TBI, 305, T-tops
Going to the track this summer, but i'm pretty sure i'm still in the 16's on the 1/4 mile (or maybe not any more)
