air conditioning
air conditioning
hi,
i have a question about the air conditioning system on my 1992 camaro rs, 3.1 v6.
the problem is that when i activate the a/c or the vent, the only vent area that the air blows through is thru the defroster vents, or when on bilevel, it will also blow thru the two small vents in the console. i am totally stumped. it worked fine one day, then the next it doesn't work right.
it blows fine cold air, and hot when on heater mode. the blower motor seems to be working because i can change speeds and it changes speeds. just no air coming thru the front vents right at you.
the only work i have done is put new plug wires and replaced the alternator, as well as replace two vacuum lines at the back of the intake plenum.
i would appreciate any ideas or help anyone can give me. i check in daily to this site, and am very impressed with the knowledge you all have.
thanks,
tom-tom

Hi
From what I have previously read on this board, the controls are vacuum operated ie. when you slide the control to turn it on and select the vents, this is operated by vacuum. If the vacuum line is somehow become disconnected or something like this, it may cause the problem you are describing.
I would sugest that you have a look behind the vent/A/c/heater controls to check.
Someone else expand a little more on this???

Well, I had that problem with my 92, and I don't know how in the hell I fixed it. I took the console apart and wiggled the vaccum lines on the back of the a/c controls and it kicked on full blast from the main vents...so that may or may not help you, but I figured I would throw that out there.
It probably is a vacuum leak in you a/c control panel. If it is then it will sound like a hissing noise when you try to turn the air on. If you don't hear this than it is a short in your panel, you may also have a blown fuse. Just track it down but it could be a pain. <img src=http://smilecwm.tripod.com/cwm/angryfire.gif>
i'm pretty sure i know what your problem is...you said u messed w/ some vac lines at the back of the motor. on the firewall, there is this black canister next to the wiper motor that stores vacuum for the heater and a/c controls. if you happened to disconnect this line, everything will work screwy. double check to be sure you have a vac line from the manifold to this canister.
