What's actually bad? If the metal motor gear stripped the plastic "raise/lower" worm gear, the motor spins itself into oblivion, and dies. I think lonsol (do a search) sells replacement motors. Got mine from a junkyard. Remember to mark the alignment of the pull-down's bolts to the car. Use a scribe or awl (or white out, even!) to get a mark of the screws as they go into the car's body. Mis-align your hatch motor down too far and you strain the motor. Mis-align it too far upward and you can get leaks. Use the marks as a guide when you install the new unit.
My fiance had an '87 camaro; before I met her, the pull-down died. They replaced it with a manual non-pull-down latch from an 82-85 f-body; so it Will bolt in.
