Is it my guage?

Hey guys...

I have a little problem with my gas guage in my '83 Z28 HO, and i wanna know if its the guage itself thats the problem, or if its somewere else in the system...

Anyway, when you fill the tank all the way, the needle stands vertical, so it looks like i have a tank and a half. When it gets down to around 1/4 tank left, it drops right down to "E". Any fuel level in between, the needle could be anywere, but never in the same place.

Is this the guage itself or something else? I'm hoping its the guage, 'cuz they arent too hard to change.

BTW, if it is the guage, does anyone know were i could get another? There are none in the wrecking yards around here...

It could be your gage. More likely it's the pickup/sending unit.

Does it go nuts if you shake the car with, say, 1/2 a tank of gas?

Either one should be available from the advertisers on this board.

The sending unit is probably the problem. Mine does the same thing except it never goes under 1/2 tank. I even installed a new gauge cluster and it didnt help at all. The sending units are expensive...i can get one from work (advance auto) for 350$!!

Mine acts similar sometimes. If I hit the guage with my finger the needle comes back down to normal after I refuel. Also, if I'm below a quarter of a tank the needle goes to E when I brake.
