Cold Start Problem
Cold Start Problem
hey guys, new to the forum, but i figured this is as good a place as any to find a solution to my problem.
i have a 1988 Camaro with the ****ty v6(2.8L) and i have a really annoying problem with it.
when the car has been sitting for a while(say over night) and the engine is completely cold, i go to start it up, it turns over fine, but once it's running, revs up and down, and almost stalls. but this only happens when it's cold if the engine is warm and it's started, it doesn't do this and runs great.
at first i thought it was the idle speed sensor, changed that but still have the problem.
i have recently changed the fuel filter, spark plugs. so i don't think these could be potential culprits.
the other thing i thought it could be is the cold start valve is screwed?
hopefully someone has an answer to this. thanx

Welcome to ThirdGen.org.
I doubt that the cold start valve is the issue. Extrat starting fuel is only delivered for about 4-5 seconds through this injector, and only at the very coldest temperatures.
And the idle speed "sensor" is actually the idle speed control. It regulates the amount of idle air based on ECM inputs including the TPS. I'd check/set the TPS voltage at idle. I'd also suggest a thorough cleaning of the throttle body, and just for grins, scan for error codes.
I'm curious as to how you got a Mitsubishi engine in yout Camaro. Since Yugo never made a V-6, they are certainly the bottom of the barrel.

Besure to have the basic's well covered. Vacume leaks, good spark plugs ecc... For instance, just becuase spark plugs are new or newer doesnt mean they are ok. I've had plenty of problems with Bosch platinums and cold start probs. Seem to run a touch cold in some applications and love to collect oil. Also check the distributor cap for corrision and look at the coil for heat saturation marks along the side of it. Big white blimishes are an indication it's either arcing or getting ready to and should be replaced.
so instead of a cold start injector, the v6 has a cold start valve? or does the cold start valve work with the cold start injector?
also, it did this before i did those other repairs.
but wouldn't the spark plugs, distributor, coil, dirty throttle body, etc. effect the way the car runs when it's warm too?

It's an extra injector, but GM calls it a "cold start valve". It operates for only a few seconds and only once when the engine is cranked when cold. Subsequent cranking will not operate the extra injector until a time interval has passed - usually about five minutes.
