Backfire!!! @ 1400 rpm

91 RS 305

The only work I've done on this car recently is replacing the muffler. Its not completely welded on yet because a friend was doing it with a droplight and missed a spot.

It started backfiring i think a few days after the muffler swap, which could be mere coincidence.

The backfire happens in all gears at around 1400 rpms under moderate to low acceleration. 1st does it EVERYTIME when i punch it off the line...it pops and hesitates...jerking my body...then it comes back to life. I have not looked under the hood and had a friend locate it for me.

Any recommendations? What would cause a backfire?

I've also noticed that at the front side of the of throttle body is oil seepage. It seems to come from the TBI's bolts and/or the post that the air cleaner secures to. Oil residue surrounds the front side of the 2 plenums and seeps under the spacer....any insight?

I'll second RB on the Lean condition and the need for a new fuel filter. But in your original post, (as quoted above), you documented a small leak at the base of the TBI. This leak is probably allowing air to leak into your intake and also creating a lean condition. Replace the TBI gasket and tighten it up.
