Is it legal to run the car w/o a muffler in Michigan.

I cut the pipe off b4 the bends under the gas tank and taking the car to the shop to get a new pipe made for it. I want to put FlowMasters on it but don't have the money for it right away so I was just going to have them run the pipe out the back of the car until I can afford them, and so it's not blowing directly on the tank. I don't want to put an aftermarket muffler on it only to take it off in a month or so.

It may not even be a state issue as much as a municipal code thing. Then there's the all-inclusive "Improper Equipment" provision. Not sure, but I'm guessing the answer you'll get from 9/10ths of the cops you'd ask is "No".

A $25 muffler is cheaper than a $75 dollar citation. If you use anti seize compound om the connections, it won't rust to the other pipes and can be removed easily when you are ready for a more expensive muffler.

 

Just the man I was hoping would answer. Thank you very much for the input, I will take heed. Fortunately the muffler is only $40 thanks to a connection through a friend.
