What causes intake backfires?
Why, when the air/fuel mix becomes too lean, does it explode in the intake and out the carb/TBI? I'm having this problem and I think that knowledge of the physics behind phonemon would aid in my diagnosis of the problem.

yup, a lean condition usually. a lean mixture is much easier to ignite than a normal or rich one. If it's lean enough it'll ignite on the back of a hot valve or something, and blowup through the intake.
