not the red fluid!..........

Hey guys.....I got a problem,
My 86 IROC is sitting the the garage awaiting the motor transplant and about a month after I parked it, it started leaking tranny fluid from what I think is where the speedometer cable enters the tranny. Is there a gasket that can go bad in that area? I am going to wipe everything done and pinpoint the leak but I am pretty sure it is coming from that area. How do I stop this leak and is it common? I need to fix this or else what good is a new motor without a functional tranny?
Thanks-
Ben

There is an 'O' ring that seals the quill housing.

thanks

I was hoping that someone knew...I had asked around and others have said that there is a gasket in there, thanks vader, but I cant say that sound bit was too helpful So how do I replace it and can I get the part at autozone?
Thanks again,
' Ben

Remove the speedometer cable. Remove the bolt and clamp bar from the quill, and pull the quill out of the tailshaft housing. The 'O' ring on the perimeter is going to be apparent as soon as you remove the quill. If the leak is from teh shaft, you'll have to remove a lock ring, washer, and slide the shaft out of the quill. There is a square rubber ring or seal in the quill to seal the shaft.

Where yuo find the replacement 'O' ring is up to you, but an auto parts store may not be a lot of help. Some of the better stocked parts houses will have 'O' ring assortments, but this one has a pretty small cross-section. You may end up at an industrial seal/power transmission supplierbefore you find what you need. Make sure you get an EPDM or Viton ring, since natural Buna rubber or nitrile will soften in the oil.

thanks

I went to a transmission shop here in town that I have worked with before and they gave me a o ring for the speedometer quill. I explained the problem and he gave me the seal. Well, the leaking has stopped now...which figures, I was wondering if this could have been caused by overfilling the 700r4? I read somewhere that there was a vent or something. I checked the level and it was way overfilled.....should I just drain some fluid and see what happens? The tranny was rebuilt 10,000 miles ago so-
Thanks-
Ben
