ok i know alot of people are going to tell me not to do this but i have already made up my mind to do it so just bare with me and help me out. i want to remove my a/c componets and my smog unit also. does anyone have any ideas on what belt size i need? if i remove the smog unit that means i have to put my headers on now right or am i wrong?? i know on the L98 motor the tensioner is on the a/c unit. if i remove all that i have mentioned and run this belt number here: 25-060495 and prythe h*ll out of the alternator will this work? i know some will say that the engine wont like it but i know and have seen this work on others let me knwo thanks.

if you really want to do this, do what i did. find a car in a wrecking yard that is running a belt system that does not include the smog pump, ac, etc etc, and convert your pully system over, very cost efficient way of doing this little change over. there are also custom pully sets available to help you out, but they are more expensive, depends on how much you want to pay for your conversion. Nothing is ver a bad idea until it does not work out, right.

Well if you want to do it, then do it right. Don't go cutting and tearing and bending. Of course your car won't like that. Your computer won't care what you do. And what would taking your air pump have to do with needing headers? Totally unrelated.

There's nothing wrong with taking your AC and A.I.R. system off the car, but do it with some sense. You have a couple choices. As was stated earlier, you can get some old V-belt style accessories from another earlier F-car form a junkyard. That may or may not cause a problem with the power steering pump and most likely your alternator won't fit anymore.

The most intelligent thing to do is to keep the serpentine setup. To do this, you will need an AC delete pulley used on 1LE Camaros under GM part number 10055890. It's about $40. Then take your air pump completely off. Then route your pulleys like this: https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/images/belt.jpg

You will need a different belt but I'm honestly not sure what size.

And how the heck would you pry the hell out of the alternator? There's no adjustment on the serpentine cars. That's what the tensioner does.

So do it right or you'll wish you did when you have to start replacing broken parts of your brackets or accessories.

Todd

Also, read the article on this site about it. It's under tech articles.

88,

Poly 'V' belts are available in ½" increments from nearly any industrial supplier that stocks power transmission components. Some of the intermediate sizes are a special order, but are available. The tensioner can take up about 1½" of belt slack, so you should be able to find something acceptable off the shelf.

BTW - Find an idler pulley to complete the task.
