please help me!!!! Fuel pump problem

ok i just ruined my Saturday..spent 8 hours replacing my fuel pump because as i had posted a few days ago the car wont turn over...and i hadnt heard the pump buzzing (classic signs your pump isnt working). Not only do i replace the stupid pump but i also replaced the pump relay, and fuel filter, checked everything over and over and it SHOULD be working. Just not getting any power to my pump apparently. Also my gas guage isnt even registering anything is in my tank when there is gas..all of a sudden. What else could it be what am i missing??? any ideas??

thanks

Nikki

IA305,

Sorry you went through all that for nothing. At the least, you know you have a reliable pump for the next several years. You should also have a clean strainer and tank (if you flushed it while it was out).

The fuel gauge level sensor and pump both rely on a good ground. Since the Pump/pickup assembly can be somewhat isolated from the tank by the large rubber 'O' ring that seals the pickup aseembly to the tank, the gground connection to the pickup assembly needs to be intact for the pump and gauge to work.

I've done a search and didn't find a thread where you isolated the pump as the problem. I saw some discussion about it, but couldn't fine any results of any diagnosis. How did you determine that the pump had failed? Did you test for voltage at the tank connector? Did you measure the resistance of the pump windings?

If you have a schematic for the car, look at the pump circuit. The FP relay will operate for only two seconds when the ignition is first turned on. That's not a lot of time to perform a diagnosis. You can apply power to the 'G' terminal on the ALDL, but that requires that you have a good relay installed to route power to the pump.

Got any clues that would help us diagnose your situation? Out of several GM EFI vehicles I've had, with over 950,000 miles logged on them, I've had only one true pump failure. All the rest have had filters and wiring problems.

well in my Firebird i went through a few fuel pumps, but it smelled like gas when they failed along with the buzzing noise that failed to come on...However in THIS camaro i just stopped hearing that buzzing noise from the pump when key was in on position. I figured it had to be my pump. NO gas smell nothing else. Now here is the strange part...the engine fan keeps comming on and staying on when the car is also in ON position. In the recent past ive had stalling on acceleration, a gas smell on startup and while idiling sometimes, then Thursday i went to start the car...sounded like it was gonna start but wont. As for the pump instilation i did everything right checked that everything was hooked up as it should be all the wires and lines everything should have been working.Plus i put a new strainer on. Do you think it could be a bad distributer??? or somthing else?

do you have spark? that would pretty much rule out the dist.. fuel pressure? if so whats it at? if it turns over and you have spark you were on the right track.. ses light? any codes? do you at least get a code 12 when tryin to pull codes? if not probably a bad ecu.. maybe a wiring problem.. broken wire somewhere.. have you checked with a test light or dvom to see if you have power to the pump/relay when you should?

well yes i checked all of those things and everything is normal except for the car wont start (no power to pump) i am thinking its a broken wire or somthing. After all that labor and ordeal i offically gave up and im having it towed to a shop so they can run diagnostics on it
