excessive revving with AC on??

i thought the compressor kicked on and off as needed, which would also put more/less load on your engine at idle... just a thought... btw: my IROC has 86,000 miles and when my AC is on it shakes my car pretty good and i notice a loss of power, I can also hear it... just for comparison's sake.. the AC compressors on our cars aren't the best made ones in the world
