Update in VATS bypass...
found the small wires I was looking for, I think. They are 2 24 gauge or so white wires coming from the column to a small clip. From the clip come two small wires white/black, purple/white. Is this what I'm looking for? I should wire the resistor across the striped wires right? These are the ones that would tell the ECM what resistance I have?
Thanks guys

In mine the VATS wires were orange. If you're not sure, plug a multimeter into the side leading to the ignition switch, put the key in the ignition, and turn the key back and forth. In most cases, you have an intermittent contact, not a completely broken one, so you should see some changes in the resistance your multimeter sees. If nothing else, measure the resistance of the chip in your key and hold the right size resistor across the plug you think is for the VATS and try to start the car. (You might need someone to turn the key while you hold the resistor in place) If it starts, you have the right set of wires.
