my modded 87GTA got beat by stock 89GTA-WHY???

The guy I raced said he has his stock, well I have put in a shift kit, airfoil, flowmaster, JET stage 2 chip, 160 stat, Mobil 1 oil, k&n air filter, accel wires and rotary cap with bosch platinum plugs. My car has a code 34 which causes the check engine light to always be on, i cant get it to go away. Could this be part of the problem? he put a good 2 cars on me and I shoulda beat him.We both have the 350 tpi's. His had 97,000 miles, mine has 175,000

well, first of all, the stock 89 has more horsepower than a stock 87. If I am not mistaken, the 89 came with about 20 extra ponies. So he has a little more to work with. Then you have quite a few miles on that engine. Its possible that things are slowing down some. Also, a good tuneup could improve things from you side. This may not be all that was at work, but I think I hit a few factors.

What about the code 34, It runs better when the code isnt on. Does my chip even help me any if its in limp mode? Or does it matter? The chip itself shoulda given me enough to take him.I also have a cowl hood which loses like 70 pounds of weight.

Those aren't mods. That's a tune-up. The only real mod that you have is the chip, which is still only worth .1 in the quarter at the most. The flowmaster might be worth a couple horsepower, but chances are he's got an exhaust too.

Your code 34 means that your mass airflow sensor is dieing or dead, which will seriously kill your performance.

30 pounds max. That's about than .03 in the quarter.

The fact is, I think his car still has more horsepower than yours, especially if you were throwing a code when you raced. Even without the codes, the cars would be very equal and driver skill could certainly account for at least a 2 car gap.

1st check your MAF relay by switching it with the burnoff relay if the computer throws a code 36 u know its the relay, then check ur TPS voltage this caused me to throw a code 34, also check to make sure there are no vacuum leaks between ur MAF and plenum... also u make no mention of the rear gears, maybe his just launches better....good luck!
