Can you drop oilpan in a 89 WS6 with mtr in car?
My little brother has a 89 ws6 with a 305 or 350 and he ran it out of oil and it sounds like he wiped a bearing.
Can the oil pan be dropped in these cars with the more in the car?
If so how much of a PIA is it? Its a 5speed...
Im in the middle of a motor swap on a 84 and dont need TWO dead birds in my yard now

Sort of, but not exactly.
It has to be raised up quite a bit, and you'll have to have the trans out anyway, because the flywheel has to come off the crank to get the seal retainer off the block. But it can be done without completely pulling it.

You would have to get that "seal retainer" off to changed the mains or get the pan off?
My plan was to just raise the crap out of the motor, hope the knock is a con-rod bearing and slap it back together. Can this be done with the trany still in the car?
Sorry for the 20 Q's..Im a mopar guy and never worked on the bottem end of a SBC

Odds are, if you have a knocking rod bearing, you need a crank, because the crank journal is damaged too. I sure wouldn't go through all that, just to put it back together and have it screw up again.
But if you want to try that, then you don't have to take the seal retainer off to get the pan off. However, to get the pan out, it has to go rearwards; and you will probably have to lose the flywheel for that. It might be possible to raise the motor enough for it to clear, but I think the bell housing will smash into the firewall before you can get it raised high enough.
Turn the crank to where the keyway points straight down, to get all the clearance you can at the front of the motor.
This is a pretty tight chassis underneath the motor, it's not like working on a truck or something. Most of the rest of it isn't much different from a Mopar as far as that goes.

ok thanks for the info...
I dont have a lift here so messing with all this on my back doesnt sound like fun.
My friend has a good crank on hand and i would be retarded to do all this just to find out i have to pull the motor anyways to put a crank in.

It's possible to get the oil pan off by raising the motor with the transmission still attached. I've done it several times. However, as was already stated, for your intentions, it would be more wise to just pull the motor for a good once over.
Good Luck!
