rear end ques

Help me out here, I know where a posi disk brake rear is out of a 88. I have a 92 Z with drum. Is it worth the switch or keep looking for a newer 10 bolt with disk?

Glad to be back up online.

few upgrades but working
just installed Alston sfc

Did the switch from drum to disc for various reasons, but frankly I'm not sure the effort was worth the money or the results in braking power. If you're a regular street drive, save your money and effort.

i'd stick with what you have. your not likely to gain much by switching unless your racing or drive hard alot. might be better off just doing a conversion on your rear end by adding discs to your housing.

I race it in SCCA events here local. I was wondering if it was worth it with the smaller axles and if the brakes were up to par with the 89 and up J65.

I would say it's not worth it. The 88 back disc brake system sucks, though the rear itself might be the BW 9-bolt, which is said to be a somewhat less weak piece than the GM 10-bolt.

Hold out for one with the later disc system if you're looking to do a brake upgrade.

The 92 has 28 spline axles. The 7 5/8" ring gear still isn't as strong as the BW 7 3/4" but the larger axles are a good start on a 10 bolt that can be made even stronger.

I replaced the 3.23 open drum in my 84z28 with a pre 87 9-bolt posi w/ 3.27s. I love the fact that I have a posi vs an open. I no longer get the 1-wheel peal and my handleing is better for it too. 3.27 is the optimal gear ratio for the 700R4, but it isn't much of a change from the 3.23s I had.

As for the addition of disk brakes, I don't really care. They look cooler (added Powerstop cross drilled rotors), but they don't stop any better/worse then the drums did. I bet it is a few extra pounds off the rear though.
