Quick Thermostat Question

I decided to swap thermostats about two weeks ago from the 195 to a 180. I did it while if had the entire engine out. Well while putting the entire thing back together there was one wire left that I could not find where it went (not the temperature sensor, single black wire located near driver side engine mount). Started the car, drove it for a while, drove great, but no temperature reading. I still cannot get a temp reading and it seems like no coolant is going through the thermostat. My old thermostat always let coolant through. Which one was functioning properly?

Is your car overheating....if the thermostat is not flowing your car will overheat..the 180 degree works fine as long as it wasnt a defective peice..and it was installed properly

UVA,

No temperature reading means teh dash instrument is not working. It doesn't mean the thermostat is not working. There are two coolant temperature sensors on your engine, and possibly three, if you have two electric cooling fans. One CTS feeds data to the ECM, the other to your dash guage, and the third operates the secondary cooling fan relay if you have two fans.

Make sure the temperature sensor on the left cylinder head is connected and operating. Make sure there are no air pockets in the cooling system, and check to see it water is flowing to the radiator (feel the upper radiator hose for heat).

ohh, which way does the collant flow normally? I thought it went was sucked in through the water neck but now that i put some thought into that it would not be very effective. Ok thanks for the enlightenment. I also dug up the old shop manuel and found out that the one wire i missed is the one that relays the temp to the dash. My question was also the fact the if I squezed the coolant hose at the top of the radiator with the old stat, collant would flow in either direction, with the knew one the hose feels like it is under a lot of pressure and will not flow back into the water neck.
