Want 305 Vortec heads for my 305......
I have decided for the time being with gas prices and all to keep and build up my 305. I would really like to get some Vortec heads, but I am confused on what fits and what doesn't. Do 305 Vortec's exist? If so will they bolt onto an 85 305 block? And is redrilling them to accept the factory intake a bad move? Any help is appreciated as always.

I don't know if they'll work with the 305 but I would suggest calling Scoggin-Dickey (sponsors here) and ask for one of their tech guys Brian. He should know or if not, he can figure it out.
Other than that, GM sells several Vortec heads some with or without egr crossovers. And in october GMPP will be offering a TPI manifold for use with Vortec heads. The perfect match!
Look into it, that would be a cool combo with the right cam.

Yes there are vortec heads that will fit on our 305's. I belive that they are on mid 90's chev trucks. They are very similar to the Alum L31 vette heads except that these are cast iron. You can get a set of Vortec heads from (I think) Jim Pace GM perf parts that have the standard intake bolt pattern already drilled and tapped. They are an extra 30 bucks but it's cheaper than spending the extra 100 for a vortec specific intake. Yes they will fit on an 85 block. They are the best bang for the buck heads for a 305 out there. They are definately on my Chrismas list. I would definately think about getting the retrofit rollers as well if you are going to run vortecs. Since you are saving the money anyway. And by the way don't let anyone tell you that you are stupid for building up your 305. You're not I did it and I love it. Email me if you want some advice. I have a few things that I would have changed with my build up. Just my .02
BTW: Yes you have to Mill the heads down to 58(or 56) CC's I believe that stock is high 60's. Car craft did a build up using them I believe that they milled .035"?? That seems like a lot to me. Pablo, I think has some good info on these heads.

Lars
