Engine ticking noise

my engine...crappy 305 TBI makes a ticking noise when i press the gas only. ive heard it could be an exhaust leak. but it seems to me that it is coming from the air filter area??
any help??

it still sounds like a exhaust leak. it might be localized by the aircleaner cause your exhaust mani might need to be tightened. There is no gasket from the factory in your exhaust manifold so it couldnt be blown. Just torque the bolts and get it up on a rack and have em check for leaks other places in the system. just because you only hear it upon acceleration only means the leak is a high pressure leak and needs back pressure to escape through. oh well..just my opinion..could be wrong. have been before. good luck

This could also be your TBI unit. I have heard these things develop a loud tick, almost like what you would hear from an exhaust leak. I wish i could tell you more but i just got into TBI and TPI so i am not that good yet. but don't rule out the TBI unit just yet on this problem of yours.
