I wouldn't call this a common problem, but any of you who have tried everything to fix a TPI that didn't want to start up right might check this out. I have had a problem for about 2 years with my '89 GTA. It would turn over fine, but didn't seem to want too fire off. If I tried a couple of times to start it with no success, then let it sit for a about a minute, it would usually fire up. I tried all the "normal" stuff first: injector leak down, coil, plugs, wires, fuel filter, etc.. I finally bought an OTC scan tool to check it with. Turns out, that the scan tool could not get any data from my ECM. I could get a trouble code with a paper clip, but the OTC could not read the data stream. There is a test for this condition in Chilton's FUEL INJECTION AND ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS-1988-90 General Motors edition manual. I did the test, and it turns out that the ECM was bad. Now the car starts and runs like normal! This is probably not the problem that most TPI's have when they won't start, but it is a difficult one to find without a scan tool. Just some info someone might be able to use!
