EGR valve problem...

EGR valve problem...

I just put in a 350, and I had the entire system put up on a diagnostics machine. My question: I heard that I may have a leak, either in my manifold, or in the egr unit. On the sheet that I received, it said that it was most likely at the pintal. What the f*cks a pintal?

It is actually a Pintle. All it is, is the valve that sits against a "seat" to seal something off. When the pintle moves off its seat, it allows whatever to flow through, much like the IAC valve. Thats pretty impressive that the "super mystery machine" can pin point an EGR leak like that (yeah, whatever).

I didn't think that the machine could have spotted it either, but the mechanic that checked it out said that it was probably that. He said that the other thing that the problem could be was a vacuum leak on the intake manifold or in the Throttle Body. I know that this could cause a vacuum leak, but I think that that would be a huge leak. So, whats the likely-hood that its just a bad EGR, throttle body, or that its a manifold gasket problem?

Furthermore, he said that this was probably causing my #5 cylinder to foul. Is that possible?

He also said that the car was running lean, but that this was probably caused by my vacuum leak. He said that the leak was causing the throttle body to dump in raw fuel... isn't that a rich fuel mixture? I thought I was up on my cars, but all of this seems a little confusing to me...

Help me guys!!

Constant EGR opening will cause the oxygen sensor to sense a lean mixture, and the ECM will command more fuel to compensate. This might account for your rich condition and plug fouling. The EGR is only supposed to be open at part-throttle cruise, so leakage can really cause problems at idle and WOT.

You still really need to answer GMTech's question relative to the operation of the car. What is it doing or not doing? Poor idle, won't accelerate, runs rough, black exhaust smoke, etc. Reading between the lines (which no one likes to do), it sounds like you are running rich, fouling out plugs. Is that the case?

The car has a rough idle to it. Sometimes it'll run so rough that the engine will stall out. I never heard or noticed a problem when I've had the engine at WOT, but I have noticed that sometimes the engine backfires a little, probably from the missed 5th cylinder.

I've yet to notice any black smoke coming out or built up on the rear bumper yet.

I agree with Vader. A constantly open EGR can cause the stumble at idle as well. I believe I would see if the EGR is stuck or the solenoid is for some reason giving constant vacuum.
