not third gen but chevy

Hey guys, My sister has a 96 corsica which has a problem. the SES light is on and stays on, she had a parts store check for codes and they didn't find anything. she said Chevy wanted $50.00 to reset the light, what has to be done to do that, can I do it or does chevy have to?

forgot to mention: I tried unhooking the battery which didn't help.

Depending on the type of error code, you MAY be able to reset the light by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. If it is a hardware fault, it will reappear as soon as you start the engine or shortly thereafter. If it is a misfire diagnosis, it may clear for a while or permanently. If you don't have the scanner to diagnose the problem, you can try that, but it really isn't a fix, just a "Band Aid".
