how EXACTLY do I use a vacuum tester?!

I think I have a vacuum leak somewhere. Although, I cannot seem to locate it. I was going to goto AutoZone and use there tester. I have read that at an idle, it should read between 18-20 inches or pounds or something Do I just unhook the vacuum line somewhere and plug the tester in? Where is the best place to unhook the line at? Anything else helpful that I should know?

-Thanks

That's it. But it won't tell you whether you have a vacuum leak or not.

Best way to find one is first a good visual; look at every line and fitting carefully for cracks etc. Then to find leaks around carb base gaskets or such things, squirt a small amount of carb cleaner at the gasket and se if the engine RPM responds at all. If it does, the gasket is leaking, letting in the fuel.

I am confused now. If a 'vacuum tester' doesn't tell you if you have a vacuum leak or not... then what is it's purpose?

To tell you how much vacuum your engine has. It's a tuning aid.

Chuck,

Check your other thread for this problem. It will be less confusing to keep it all together.
