ATTN: Texas Vehicle Inspectors, got some Qs...

Okay heres the deal: I got my car inspected yesterday, but I failed sue to it running too rich, but thats easy to fix. But the guy who inspected it said that in texas, only '84 and newer cars are required ot have a catalytic converter and smog pump. In fact, he said the only thing my car had to do to pass emissions was have the stock air cleaner, heat riser tube, and pass the sniffer test. He even said that i could legally ditch the computer. If there are any texas emissions laws experts here, please tell me if this is true... thanx

The way that I understand the law is that the vehicle in question needs to be 25 years of age to be free of the emissions certification process. As for the computer it only serves to operate certain subsystems that used to be operated off of the vacuume supply as well as certain engine controls on specfied engines. I would just be sure to have the AIR pump, EGR, PCV, heat riser, air cleaner, cat, and be burning clean and you should not have a problem.
I am not an expert in this field but I have endured the inspection process here in north Texas for 22 years.

LOW performance people should drive low performance vehicles!

I'm no inspection expert, but I'm pretty sure that under federal law you cannot defeat or remove any emissions component, and I don't think Texas (or any state) has the ability to override that law. I can see maybe that only '84 and newer cars must go through with an emissions test, but I think that if your car originally came with a catalytic converter and smog pump then legally you must have it. If that place will pass you without a converter, hey, more power to you.

Where I go in East TX the guy told me that in 2yrs all cars 84 and newer will be taking it up the tail pipe, maybe this is only in my area but the only problem I've had with inspections is the new gas cap pressure test(STUPID)

Unless you live in Dallas, El Paso, or Houston counties, then your car shouldn't be emissions tested. All of the emissions equipment must be on the car, but you shouldn't have to have a sniffer test done. I'm not sure if Rowlett is in Dallas county, but if it isn't then all you need is a safty inspection. If the inspector tells you otherwise he is lying.

Rowlett is in Dallas county, and they always do a sniffer test on all our cars here. I wish there was a website where the official rules were posted.
