1987 Trans Am GTA ignition module(I searched)

Hello all,
Tonight I was helping my friend who owns a 1987 Trans Am GTA with the 5.7l TPI. We were fixing a few little problems here and there and one of them was installing a new ignition module. The problem is that when we took the old one off, we didn't realize the two wires coming from the pick up coil weren't marked. Does it matter which one goes to which? The leads on the module are marked P and N. I told him I don't think it matters from looking at a haynes manual, but just wanted to check first. Also, does anyone know for sure if this engine has a knock sensor, and if so, where it is?

Thank you,

John

Welcome to thirdgen.org.

I don't think it should be an issue, the PU coil is just wound wire without polarity.

Not sure about the pickup coil. Hook it up- if it doesn't work, you know you got it hooked up wrong.

Knock sensor- yes. Just above and in front of the starter screwed into the block just above the oil pan. One wire sensor.

Yeah, the pickup coil just senses a magnetic pulse from the distributor; there's no polarity for it. Either there's a pulse or there isn't; that's all the module checks for.
