building a 350 for Z28
building a 350 for Z28
have purchased a 92Z28 5sp 305TPI with 160,000 miles and found when it gets to running temp the oil pressure goes to nothing. In need of rebuilding ASAP.
I decided to go to a 350 so I found a 350 TBI
out of a 93 Caprice police car. I was told that this was a good long block to use since all the TPI and acc will bolt right up. Is this so? I am going to rebuild the 350 and would like to know what Cam and Pistons would be best to use? I'm sure we will bore the block and turn crank ect.
The car will be driven daily to and from work approx 100 miles round trip. But it also needs to be "FUN" on the weekends.
It already has a Full Flow dual cat exhaust system. Any suggestion on air intake (K&N)?
maybe or is there something better.

As far as cam and pistions you could just buy some new stock pistons and be fine and pull plenty of hp with them. The engine I bought from one of the GM performance factorys was basically a 91-92 caprice 350 block and had an LT1 cam in it and was rated at 300hp. Has stock GM, valve relief pistons (TRW makes some good stock ones for a decent price). The heads are iron head 9.8:1 compresion. You could have a 3 angle valve job done to the heads and some mild port and polishing if you want to stay cheap or go buy some 190cc AFR heads if you want a good high performance aluminum head. Heads will cost as much or more than the cost to rebuild your engine. There are some cheap iron heads on the market like the real World heads and the Tourqers. As far as cam I heard the LPE 219 is a good cam but call the cam manufacture after you choose your heads so they can match the cam to them. You will need a new chip if you do go with high performance heads and cam.
By the way my car is a daily driver and about 100 miles round trip also. I get around 17+/- mpg and thats keeping my foot in it a lot. Your TPI should give you the same or slightly better.
