Roller lifters Help
Hey guys the other day I heard a knock in my engine and it sounded like a blown lifter , so I had a few people look at it and they said that it was probably a blown lifter . so i tore the engine apart and I realized I have a roller motor. My motor is a 350 tbi and I got the motor out of 89 truck anyway I was wondering if there was any way to look at a roller lifter and tell if it is blown. I appreciate it guys.
I think he just means a lifter gone bad. I wish I could help you, I have a tapping lifter in my car, and dont know how to find out which one, and I think the lifters are something like 8 bucks a peice, somewhere in their, so buy 16 of them, and that starts to add up.

I'd bet the farm that you don't have roller lifters, unless it isn't the original motor. Trucks didn't get roller cams until the "Vortec" motors come out.
Regardless...
Use a pushrod to push the internals of the lifter down. Use a small flat head screwdriver, or awl and pop the retainer clip out. Flip the lifter upside down over the kitchen sink (just kidding about the kitchen sink part
). You may have to use something to pull the piston out. Check to make sure the inner spring is still alive. That's the only thing I can think that would go bad, unless the piston seized??
Or what ede said about internal leakage. What would cause that ede? Too much clearance (wear) between the piston and inner lifter diam?

I got the engine from a buddy of mine who owns a collision place, the truck was totalled and I had my friend make the guy an offer on the engine . The truck was somewhat sooped up so I am guessing that it isnt the stock engine for that year truck , plus I pulled the lifters out and looked at them and there are roller I am sure of that .Oh and 89 ws6 my lifters costed me $180 bucks so I hope you dont have a roller motor buddy. Thanks guys
